The Dharma of Timeless Sŏn
As a rule, Sŏn is a practice that leads to the achievement of freedom of mind through gaining awakening to one’s own nature, which is originally free from discrimination or attachment. Since time immemorial, those who have been determined to achieve the great Way have all practiced Sŏn.
If people intend to practice genuine Sŏn, they first should take true voidness as the substance and marvelous existence as the function and, externally, be unmoving like Mount T’ai when in contact with the myriad of sensory conditions, and, internally, keep the mind unsullied, like empty space. Let the mind function so that it is not acting even in action and not resting even at rest. If we do so, then there will be no discrimination that is separate from absorption, so that the functioning of the six sense organs will accord with the self-nature of the void and calm, numinous awareness. This is what is called Mahāyāna meditation and the method of practice in which we progress in concert through the Threefold Study.
Therefore it says in a sūtra, “Give rise to a mind that, even while responding, does not abide anywhere.” This is precisely the great dharma of practice that remains unmoved amid the myriad of sensory conditions. This dharma may seem extremely difficult, but if only we come to understand in detail the methods of practice, then even a farmer wielding a hoe can practice Sŏn, as can a carpenter wielding a hammer, a clerk using an abacus, and an official seeing to an administrative matter; and we can practice Sŏn even while going about or staying at home. What need is there to bother with choosing a specific place and with talking about action or rest? However, for people who are first beginning to practice Sŏn, the mind is not easily controlled according to their wishes; it is like training an ox where, if the reins of the mind are dropped even for a moment, it will instantly harm one’s commitment to the Way. Therefore, if you keep exerting yourself without letting go of that spirit which is ready to fight to the bitter end no matter how alluring the sensory conditions you face may be, the mind gradually will become tamed and you will reach a state where the mind will do what you wish. Each and every time you are in contact with a sensory condition, do not forget to keep the thought in mind that an opportunity for practice has arrived, always taking a suitable measure of only whether or not you are affected by that sensory condition. Thus, once there is a gradual increase in instances of behavior in which the mind does what you wish, you may from time to time let yourself be put in situations that you normally would find extremely attractive or abhorrent. If the mind is moved as before, then your commitment to the Way is immature; but if it is unmoved, then you will know that this is proof that your commitment to the Way is ripening. However, at the very time that you realize that the mind is unmoving, do not let down your guard, for it is unmoving through your employing the mental powers, rather than naturally unmoving. The mind has been well tamed only when it is unmoving even if left unguarded.
If you continue for a long time to practice Sŏn so as to put an end to all the defilements and achieve freedom of mind, then, you will be centered like an iron pillar and defended from the outside like a stone wall, so that neither wealth or status, or honor and glory, can coax the mind, nor can anyone make the mind submit through weapons or authority. Practicing all dharmas in this wise, you will never be enticed or obstructed, and even while residing in this dusty world, you constantly will attain hundreds and thousands of samādhis. Once you reach this stage, the entire world will be transformed into the one genuine realm of reality, and right and wrong, good and evil, and all the defiled and pure dharmas will become the single taste of ghee. This state is called the gateway of nonduality. Freedom in birth and death, liberation from the cycle of rebirths, and the ultimate bliss of the pure land all emerge through this gateway.
Recently groups that practice Sŏn think that Sŏn is extremely difficult. There are many who hold that it is impossible to do for someone who has a family or who pursues an occupation, and that you can only practice Sŏn by entering into the mountains and sitting quietly. This view derives from their ignorance of the great dharma, in which all dharmas are nondual. But if one can only practice Sŏn while sitting but not while standing－this would be a sickly Sŏn indeed; how could this become the great dharma that can save all sentient beings? Moreover, since the own-essence of the nature is not merely limited to voidness and calmness alone, if you practice that Sŏn which is like a senseless thing, this would not be the Sŏn practice that disciplines the nature, but the making of a helpless invalid. Therefore, even when involved in disturbing situations, the mind should be undisturbed; even when involved with greed-creating sensory conditions, the mind should be unmoving－this is true Sŏn and true absorption.

The recent approval of Monsanto's Roundup Ready alfalfa is one of
most divisive controversies in American agriculture, but in 2003, it
was simply the topic at hand in a string of emails between the US
Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Monsanto. In the emails, federal
regulators and Monsanto officials shared edits to a list of the
USDA's questions about Monsanto's original petition to fully legalize
the alfalfa. Later emails show a USDA regulator accepted Monsanto's
help with drafting the initial environmental assessment (EA) of the
alfalfa and planned to "cut and paste" parts of Monsanto's revised
petition right into the government's assessment.
The emails were uncovered during a lawsuit filed by the Center for
Food Safety (CFS) and concerned farmers that challenged the USDA's
decision to approve Roundup Ready alfalfa in 2005. The CFS views the
emails as prime evidence of "collusion" between the biotech industry
and public officials charged with regulating genetically engineered
(GE) crops. It's unclear if such internal cooperation continues under
the current administration, but regulators still openly rely on data
and research provided by the biotech industry when approving GE
technology.

A federal judge temporarily banned the alfalfa in 2007 as a result of
the CFS lawsuit, but last summer, the Supreme Court ruled that the
USDA could reconsider deregulating the GE alfalfa after completing an
environmental impact statement (EIS). The USDA fully deregulated the
alfalfa on January 27, 2011.
Like the GE corn and soybeans that now dominate agribusiness, Roundup
Ready alfalfa is genetically engineered to tolerate glyphosate-based
herbicides like Monsanto's Roundup. Farmers can plant Roundup Ready
crops and blanket their fields with the herbicide knowing that weeds
will be killed and the Roundup Ready crops will be spared.
Back in 2003, USDA officials were concerned about "deficiencies" in
Monsanto's original petition to deregulate the GE alfalfa seeds, so
they drafted a letter with about 90 questions for Monsanto. In
several emails, officials working with the USDA's Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service (APHIS) asked Monsanto officials to comment
and "suggest improvements" on at least three drafts of the
"deficiency letter." Monsanto was happy to redraft the letter point
by point.
Monsanto withdrew its original petition in February 2004 after two
undocumented conference calls with APHIS personnel. One month before
the final petition was submitted in April, Monsanto regulatory
officer Glen Rogan sent two emails to APHIS petition reviewer Virgil
Meier indicating that Monsanto was willing to help draft the USDA's
EA of Roundup Ready alfalfa. APHIS conducts EA's to assess the
potential environmental impacts of proposed agricultural products.
Rogan asked Meier to consult his boss and colleagues about the
possibility of Monsanto assisting in the assessment because it would
be "precedent setting." Meier, who was in charge of writing the EA,
accepted Monsanto's help and said he would "cut and paste"
information right from petition into the EA:
If you are willing to provide assistance with the EA, I would
appreciate it. At this time, no one has voiced concern with this so I
am assuming that there is no problem. In a related matter, because I
am supposed to write the EA, I would appreciate receiving an
electronic copy of the petition (Word?) so I can do cut and paste
which I think will speed up the completion of the EA.
Bill Freese, a policy analyst with CFS, said this kind of cooperation
between federal regulators and the biotech industry is unacceptable.
"It should go without saying that an applicant should play no role in
APHIS's regulatory review of an applicant's product, beyond supplying
requested information," Freese wrote in a 2009 letter to the
USDA. The USDA did not respond to Freese's letter, but a spokesperson
told Truthout that the USDA works closely with industry petitioners
and can include some information from a petition in the EA.
Freese told Truthout that the approval process for controversial GE
crops like Roundup Ready alfalfa is basically a "sham" designed to
increase consumer confidence in the controversial GE crops. Freese
has been fighting the battle against biotech for years, and he can't
remember a single case when regulators failed to eventually grant
approval of a GE crop.
Sham or not, the final EIS that led to the final approval of Roundup
Ready alfalfa is a massive document that dives deep into the
scientific debates over GE crops. Opponents argue that Roundup Ready
alfalfa will threaten organic crops with herbicide drifts, increase
the presence of an already growing list of herbicide-resistant weeds
and inevitably contaminate conventional and organic alfalfa with
transgenes through cross-pollination. The EIS contains evidence of
these risks, but the USDA considers them inherent to modern
agriculture and ruled that Roundup Ready alfalfa poses no more "plant
pest risks" than conventional or organic alfalfa varieties.
The humble alfalfa crop provides more to Americans than crunchy
sprouts for salads and sandwiches. Farmers plant millions of acres of
alfalfa to produce forage seed and hay to feed cows and other
livestock. The ever-growing organic dairy industry, for example,
depends on naturally grown alfalfa products to feed its livestock,
and in turn, the millions of Americans who eat organic food. The
possibility that Roundup Ready alfalfa could cross-pollinate and
infect non-GE organic alfalfa is a key issue for organic farmers. If
the Roundup Ready transgene spreads to non-GE alfalfa - which critics
like Freese claim is inevitable - then the industry may have to
change the standards for determining what can be labeled "organic"
and "natural," and the growing organic food industry could face
millions of dollars in losses if their alfalfa is contaminated with
Monsanto transgenes.
The USDA claims that the probability of gene flow between GE and
non-GE alfalfa is very low, but the EIS does document several
instances of transgenic contamination. About 200,000 acres of Roundup
Ready alfalfa in 48 states were planted and harvested in 2005 and
2006 before the CFS lawsuit forced a ban. During this time, two
alfalfa seed production firms, Dairyland and Cal/West Seeds, reported
transgenic contamination in non-GE alfalfa seeds in California,
Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Dairyland reported contamination rates
hovering around 1 percent, but in 2009, Cal/West reported that 12
percent of more than 200 alfalfa seed lots were contaminated with
transgenes, and in 2008, all six of the firm's research lots tested
positive for GE contamination. Preliminary data from 2009 showed that
30 percent of seed stock lots were contaminated.
Forage Genetics International, the company that developed Roundup
Ready alfalfa for Monsanto, provides the largest data set on
cross-contamination in the USDA's final EIS. A report conducted by
Forage Genetics on the "best practices" established by the industry
for growing Roundup Ready alfalfa found cross-contamination rates
between 0 and .18 percent. Critics like Freese say data provided by
the industry doesn't belong in the USDA's assessments, but the USDA
claims the data shows "acceptable" rates of transgenic contamination.
Freese and the CFS are not the only advocates concerned about the
economic impacts of cross-contamination. In June 2010, 55 members of
Congress joined Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) in sending a letter to
the USDA requesting the department decide against deregulating
Roundup Ready alfalfa. Citing alfalfa seed markets in countries that
have banned GE seeds and data provided by Dairyland and Cal/West
Seeds, Leahy and his supporters claim the US could lose $197 million
annually in alfalfa seed and forage exports as a result of GE
contamination of organic and conventional seeds.
The letter also questions the need for Roundup Ready alfalfa when
only 7 percent of alfalfa hay is currently treated with herbicides.
Freese said alfalfa is often treated with chemicals sprayed by
airplanes, and the CFS is concerned that aerial sprays of Roundup
could drift onto conventional and organic alfalfa plots and damage
crops that are not resistant to Roundup. According to some estimates,
Roundup Ready alfalfa could increase herbicide use by up to 23
million pounds per year.
The increased reliance on glyphosate-based herbicides like Roundup
has caused weeds to develop their own tolerance to the chemical.
Herbicide-resistant weeds, sometimes called "superweeds," now infest
millions of acres of cropland. Farmers now combat the weeds with
cocktails of herbicides like 2,4 D - an ingredient in Agent Orange -
that are know to be more toxic than glyphosate. In all, farmers have
used at least 318 million more pounds of herbicides and pesticides in
the past 13 years as a result of planting GE crop seeds like Roundup
Ready corn and soy.
The USDA, however, concluded that new glyphosate-resistant weeds
would be slow to develop in Roundup Ready alfalfa stands.
Freese said the USDA chose to ignore important data in favor of
outdated research and information provided by firms with close
connections to the biotech industry. "APHIS cites studies on
herbicide use with Roundup Ready crops that were done in the late
1990s," Freese said. "That was before any glyphosate-resistant weeds
had evolved, and so before the time when their emergence began
driving the big increase in herbicide use we've been seeing since
2001."
Freese said that, like the data provided on cross-contamination
provided by Forage Genetics, the USDA relies on data from
industry-funded groups like the National Center for Food and
Agriculture Policy (NCFAP) and PG Economics.
The biotech industry plays hardball in Congress as well. One week
before Roundup Ready alfalfa was deregulated, USDA Secretary Tom
Vilsack testified before the House Committee on Agriculture, where
Chairmen Frank Lucas (R-Oklahoma) led a charge to press the USDA to
fully deregulate the alfalfa. A political action committee and
individuals associated with Monsanto donated $11,000 to Lucas'
campaign last year, and Lucas has received $1,247,844 from the
agribusiness industry during his political career, according to
watchdog site www.opensecrets.org. Since 1999, the top 50 companies
holding agricultural or food patents have spent more than $572
million in campaign contributions and lobbying efforts, according to
a report released last year.
The USDA does invite the American public to weigh in on controversial
issues like GE crops, and the CFS reports that, last spring, 200,000
people submitted letters "highly critical" of the department's draft
conclusions on Roundup Ready alfalfa. "Clearly the USDA was not
listening to the public or farmers but rather to just a handful of
corporations," CFS Director Anthony Kimbrell said after Roundup Ready
alfalfa was fully legalized. The public comments may have fallen on
deaf ears, or perhaps they were just drowned out by the booming voice
of a biotech industry that refuses to take no for an answer.

positive for GE contamination. Preliminary data from 2009 showed that
30 percent of seed stock lots were contaminated.
Forage Genetics International, the company that developed Roundup
Ready alfalfa for Monsanto, provides the largest data set on
cross-contamination in the USDA's final EIS. A report conducted by
Forage Genetics on the "best practices" established by the industry
for growing Roundup Ready alfalfa found cross-contamination rates
between 0 and .18 percent. Critics like Freese say data provided by
the industry doesn't belong in the USDA's assessments, but the USDA
claims the data shows "acceptable" rates of transgenic contamination.
Freese and the CFS are not the only advocates concerned about the
economic impacts of cross-contamination. In June 2010, 55 members of
Congress joined Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) in sending a letter to
the USDA requesting the department decide against deregulating
Roundup Ready alfalfa. Citing alfalfa seed markets in countries that
have banned GE seeds and data provided by Dairyland and Cal/West
Seeds, Leahy and his supporters claim the US could lose $197 million
annually in alfalfa seed and forage exports as a result of GE
contamination of organic and conventional seeds.
The letter also questions the need for Roundup Ready alfalfa when
only 7 percent of alfalfa hay is currently treated with herbicides.
Freese said alfalfa is often treated with chemicals sprayed by
airplanes, and the CFS is concerned that aerial sprays of Roundup
could drift onto conventional and organic alfalfa plots and damage
crops that are not resistant to Roundup. According to some estimates,
Roundup Ready alfalfa could increase herbicide use by up to 23
million pounds per year.
The increased reliance on glyphosate-based herbicides like Roundup
has caused weeds to develop their own tolerance to the chemical.
Herbicide-resistant weeds, sometimes called "superweeds," now infest
millions of acres of cropland. Farmers now combat the weeds with
cocktails of herbicides like 2,4 D - an ingredient in Agent Orange -
that are know to be more toxic than glyphosate. In all, farmers have
used at least 318 million more pounds of herbicides and pesticides in
the past 13 years as a result of planting GE crop seeds like Roundup
Ready corn and soy.
The USDA, however, concluded that new glyphosate-resistant weeds
would be slow to develop in Roundup Ready alfalfa stands.
Freese said the USDA chose to ignore important data in favor of
outdated research and information provided by firms with close
connections to the biotech industry. "APHIS cites studies on
herbicide use with Roundup Ready crops that were done in the late
1990s," Freese said. "That was before any glyphosate-resistant weeds
had evolved, and so before the time when their emergence began
driving the big increase in herbicide use we've been seeing since
2001."
Freese said that, like the data provided on cross-contamination
provided by Forage Genetics, the USDA relies on data from
industry-funded groups like the National Center for Food and
Agriculture Policy (NCFAP) and PG Economics.
The biotech industry plays hardball in Congress as well. One week
before Roundup Ready alfalfa was deregulated, USDA Secretary Tom
Vilsack testified before the House Committee on Agriculture, where
Chairmen Frank Lucas (R-Oklahoma) led a charge to press the USDA to
fully deregulate the alfalfa. A political action committee and
individuals associated with Monsanto donated $11,000 to Lucas'
campaign last year, and Lucas has received $1,247,844 from the
agribusiness industry during his political career, according to
watchdog site www.opensecrets.org. Since 1999, the top 50 companies
holding agricultural or food patents have spent more than $572
million in campaign contributions and lobbying efforts, according to
a report released last year.
The USDA does invite the American public to weigh in on controversial
issues like GE crops, and the CFS reports that, last spring, 200,000
people submitted letters "highly critical" of the department's draft
conclusions on Roundup Ready alfalfa. "Clearly the USDA was not
listening to the public or farmers but rather to just a handful of
corporations," CFS Director Anthony Kimbrell said after Roundup Ready
alfalfa was fully legalized. The public comments may have fallen on
deaf ears, or perhaps they were just drowned out by the booming voice
of a biotech industry that refuses to take no for an answer.

For that reason, we urge you to use your credit card via PayPal.com or to use PayPal.com’s own system for transferring money. Either way works well. We are discontinuing the direct Credit Card payment options on all of our web pages in order to protect your donations: they should be used for health freedom, not to feed companies which have no interest in solving the problem which their customers experience. This sort of loss makes it very difficult for us to meet our obligations, maintain our web sites and the Action eAlert “Educate Decision Makers” system.
We have made vigorous and repeated attempts to solve this problem and have come to the conclusion that neither company has any interest in solving the problem by creating security systems which would protect their customers since each failed attempt is “free money” for them and the sum total of these preventable, but expensive, to us, and profitable, to them, charges is enormous.
For that reason, we urge you to use your credit card via PayPal.com or to use PayPal.com’s own system for transferring money. Either way works well. We are discontinuing the direct Credit Card payment options on all of our web pages in order to protect your donations: they should be used for health freedom, not to feed companies which have no interest in solving the problem which their customers experience. We have to ask if the problems are generated externally by hackers or internally by corporate operatives increasing the bottom line for their employers.

Five Stages of Nutrient Deficiency Leading to Disease

In 1964 Myron Brin published a classic analysis of the five stages in the development of a vitamin or nutrient deficiency. He illustrated the schema with reference to vitamin B1 (thiamin).
In the first, or preliminary stage, inadequate B1 availability due to faulty diet, malabsorption or abnormal metabolism leads to a greatly reduced urinary B1 loss.
In the second, or biochemical stage, the activity of a key enzyme—transketolase—which is activated by B1, is significantly reduced. Adding B1 to a blood sample from a person at this stage increases his or her transketolase activity.
In the third, or physiologic stage, various general symptoms develop, such as lessened appetite, insomnia, increased irritability, and malaise.
In the fourth, or clinical stage, a constellation of symptoms classically specific to B1 deficiency disease (beri-beri) develops: e.g., intermittent claudication, polyneuritis, bradycardia, peripheral edema, and ophthalmoplegia (paralysis of eye muscles).
In the fifth, or anatomical stage, histopathological changes due to cellular structural damage are seen, such as cardiac hypertrophy, degeneration of the cerebellar granule layer, and swelling of the microglia.8
Although Brin’s five-stage deficiency schema is exemplified with regard to B1, it is in principle applicable to any nutrient, as Brin himself notes. Brin’s schema is especially illuminating with regard to the RDAs, since the “just preventing failure of specific functions” and “just preventing specific deficiency signs” criteria of nutritional requirement, which is the basis of the RDA concept, are only evidenced in the fourth (clinical) and fifth (anatomical) stages of developing nutritional deficiency disease.
The first three stages, although they are objectively, empirically measurable and observable phases of a developing nutrient deficiency, do not involve either “specific deficiency symptoms” or “failure of a specific nutrient-related function.” What follows from this is quite simple. The RDA level of nutrient intake may keep most people out of the severe illness-leading-to-death fourth and fifth nutrient deficiency stages, but RDA nutrient levels cannot be presumed to be adequate to keep one out of the first three stages of “subclinical” deficiency, let alone in a more optimal, vibrant, energized state of health.
Genetic Need for High-Dose Vitamins
A recent major scientific review article by famed nutrition researcher Bruce Ames and colleagues makes it clear that for many people, the RDAs will not be sufficient even to avoid major nutrient-related illness and death. Noting that a key function of many vitamins, minerals and nutrients is to activate the metabolic enzymes on which all life depends, the Ames group reports that about 50 human genetic diseases caused by defective enzymes can be remedied or ameliorated through high-dose nutrient therapy, which at least partially restores defective enzyme activity.9
Ames and coworkers point out that an alternate form of a gene which is present in 1 percent or more of the population is called a “polymorphism.” They state:
Our analysis of metabolic disease that affects cofactor [nutrient] binding, particularly as a result of polymorphic mutations, may present a novel rationale for high-dose vitamin therapy, perhaps hundreds of times the normal dietary reference intake (DRI) in some cases. This area should interest the entire health community because of the considerable percentage of the population affected by polymorphisms…. The setting of a DRI may become more complicated if a sizable percentage of the population in fact has a higher B-vitamin requirement because of a polymorphism…. It also seems plausible that for each example of a genetic disease or polymorphism clearly involving derangement of metabolism, multiple forms of the disease exist that reflect [only] slight changes in [genetically defective enzyme activity] but that are not commonly thought of as genetic diseases…. The administration of high doses of vitamins may reverse, at least partially, many more genetic diseases than those described here.... Provided safe dosages are used…there is potentially much benefit and possibly little harm in trying high-dose nutrient therapy because of the…low level of risk. Most of the vitamins discussed here appear safe in relatively high doses because the body can discard excess.”9
Given the large number of case reports analyzed in the Ames article, the question becomes less “Are high dose vitamins safe?” than “For many people, are RDA-only vitamin levels safe?” The Ames group reports a myriad of cases with people being snatched from the jaws of death or crippling disease by megadose (10-500X RDA) nutrient therapy, who would have perished or suffered irreparable harm on mere RDA vitamin doses. And some of the genetic enzyme defects discussed in the Ames article may affect millions of people—e.g., those leading to homocysteinemia.
The Ames group also comments on the safety of even megadose levels of many nutrients. They report that 500 mg of B6 per day for two years appears to be safe, but that 1,000 mg/day is probably the maximum.9 No safe upper limit (UL) for B1 has been set because of its relative safety.9 No UL has been set for B2 because there have been few reports of adverse effects even with doses in the hundreds of milligrams.9 Adverse effects of niacin (B3) usually occur at doses over 1,500 mg, with the niacinamide form of B3 being even safer.9 No toxicity of biotin has been reported with doses of 200 mg/day or less.9 B12 therapy with 5000 mcg or less has resulted in few adverse effects.9 Due to a lack of reports of adverse effects, no UL has been set for pantothenic acid.9 Adverse effects with vitamin E are rare below 1,500 IU/day.9 (In a 1988 review article on vitamin E safety, Bendich and Machlin noted virtually no side effects in six double-blind human studies even up to 3,200 IU/day).10 Vitamin D side effects typically occur at doses of 10,000-50,000 IU.9

In 1964 Myron Brin published a classic analysis of the five stages in the development of a vitamin or nutrient deficiency. He illustrated the schema with reference to vitamin B1 (thiamin).
In the first, or preliminary stage, inadequate B1 availability due to faulty diet, malabsorption or abnormal metabolism leads to a greatly reduced urinary B1 loss.
In the second, or biochemical stage, the activity of a key enzyme—transketolase—which is activated by B1, is significantly reduced. Adding B1 to a blood sample from a person at this stage increases his or her transketolase activity.
In the third, or physiologic stage, various general symptoms develop, such as lessened appetite, insomnia, increased irritability, and malaise.
In the fourth, or clinical stage, a constellation of symptoms classically specific to B1 deficiency disease (beri-beri) develops: e.g., intermittent claudication, polyneuritis, bradycardia, peripheral edema, and ophthalmoplegia (paralysis of eye muscles).
In the fifth, or anatomical stage, histopathological changes due to cellular structural damage are seen, such as cardiac hypertrophy, degeneration of the cerebellar granule layer, and swelling of the microglia.8
Although Brin’s five-stage deficiency schema is exemplified with regard to B1, it is in principle applicable to any nutrient, as Brin himself notes. Brin’s schema is especially illuminating with regard to the RDAs, since the “just preventing failure of specific functions” and “just preventing specific deficiency signs” criteria of nutritional requirement, which is the basis of the RDA concept, are only evidenced in the fourth (clinical) and fifth (anatomical) stages of developing nutritional deficiency disease.
The first three stages, although they are objectively, empirically measurable and observable phases of a developing nutrient deficiency, do not involve either “specific deficiency symptoms” or “failure of a specific nutrient-related function.” What follows from this is quite simple. The RDA level of nutrient intake may keep most people out of the severe illness-leading-to-death fourth and fifth nutrient deficiency stages, but RDA nutrient levels cannot be presumed to be adequate to keep one out of the first three stages of “subclinical” deficiency, let alone in a more optimal, vibrant, energized state of health.
Genetic Need for High-Dose Vitamins
A recent major scientific review article by famed nutrition researcher Bruce Ames and colleagues makes it clear that for many people, the RDAs will not be sufficient even to avoid major nutrient-related illness and death. Noting that a key function of many vitamins, minerals and nutrients is to activate the metabolic enzymes on which all life depends, the Ames group reports that about 50 human genetic diseases caused by defective enzymes can be remedied or ameliorated through high-dose nutrient therapy, which at least partially restores defective enzyme activity.9
Ames and coworkers point out that an alternate form of a gene which is present in 1 percent or more of the population is called a “polymorphism.” They state:
Our analysis of metabolic disease that affects cofactor [nutrient] binding, particularly as a result of polymorphic mutations, may present a novel rationale for high-dose vitamin therapy, perhaps hundreds of times the normal dietary reference intake (DRI) in some cases. This area should interest the entire health community because of the considerable percentage of the population affected by polymorphisms…. The setting of a DRI may become more complicated if a sizable percentage of the population in fact has a higher B-vitamin requirement because of a polymorphism…. It also seems plausible that for each example of a genetic disease or polymorphism clearly involving derangement of metabolism, multiple forms of the disease exist that reflect [only] slight changes in [genetically defective enzyme activity] but that are not commonly thought of as genetic diseases…. The administration of high doses of vitamins may reverse, at least partially, many more genetic diseases than those described here.... Provided safe dosages are used…there is potentially much benefit and possibly little harm in trying high-dose nutrient therapy because of the…low level of risk. Most of the vitamins discussed here appear safe in relatively high doses because the body can discard excess.”9
Given the large number of case reports analyzed in the Ames article, the question becomes less “Are high dose vitamins safe?” than “For many people, are RDA-only vitamin levels safe?” The Ames group reports a myriad of cases with people being snatched from the jaws of death or crippling disease by megadose (10-500X RDA) nutrient therapy, who would have perished or suffered irreparable harm on mere RDA vitamin doses. And some of the genetic enzyme defects discussed in the Ames article may affect millions of people—e.g., those leading to homocysteinemia.
